Varanasi, or Banaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living
cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually
unrivalled. Mark Twain, the English author and literateur, who was enthralled
by the legend and sanctity of Banaras, once wrote : "Banaras is older
than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice
as old as all of them put together".
Duration: 6 Nights / 7 Days Places Covered: ------- Day 1 :
Drive down from Gangotri to Mala (1478 m). The actual trek starts here, after
crossing the river Bhagirathi.
Day 2 :
Trek 5 kms to Saurikigad (1218 m). This trek is along an even surface.
Day 3 :
Trek 10 kms uphill to Belak (2439 m).
Day 4 :
Trek 14 kms downhill through dense forests, to Budha Kedar (1524m).
Day 5 :
Trek 26 kms uphill through terraced fields, and idyllic villages to Panwali
(3963 m). The 'bugyals' (alpine meadows) along this trek, are simply enchanting.
Day 6 :
Trek 14 kms downhill to Sonprayag (1829 m).
